Smell Like A Parody. The Best Of The Old Spice Man Spoofs.

By now everyone knows that hunky Isaiah Mustafa's portrayal of the towel clad Old Spice Man has long gone viral. And, as to be expected, there are numerous spoofs and parodies of the entertaining advertisement. Here's a few of the best.

"The Woman You'd Love Your Woman To be Like"

The Sun Newspaper spoofed the ad to celebrate 40 years of page 3. The parody was accompanied by an in-paper offer of a free pack of Page 3 playing cards on Wednesday 17th of November.

"Smell Like A Monster"

Sesame Street parodied the spot with Grover to teach us the word "On":

"Study Like A Scholar"

A fun and smart parody to encourage students to study brought to you from the Harold B. Lee Library:

"The Man Who Lost His Girlfriend To The Man Your Man Could Smell Like"

Los Angeles comedian and YouTube star Toby Turner (aka Tobuscus) plays a guy whose girlfriend has left him to take a sunset cruise of the Galapagos Islands with the real Old Spice man.

"The Sausage Your Sausage Could Taste Like"

Bizarre and phony product, Mr. Happy's Spicy Dijon, personifies a sausage as the Old Spice Man:

This animated spoof uses Mel Gibson's phone rant as a call to the Old Spice Man by Smallpoppy productions:

and lastly, an entertaining Old Spice Remix by youtuber Mike Relm:

New Call Of Duty: Black Ops Commercial Makes Even Peace Lovers Want To Shoot Someone.

The latest 60 second spot (shown after the stills in this post) for Activision's soon to be released Call of Duty: Black Ops video game, conceived of by TBWA Chiat Day and directed by Rupert Sanders, makes even me want to pick up a gun - or at least a game controller - and I'm about as far as one gets from a war monger.

Despite your stance on war or video games, one cannot deny the visceral appeal of this commercial. Set to the Rolling Stone's Vietnam-era classic Gimme Shelter, the gamers (a variety which includes, amongst many, a medical technician, a scientist, an electronics store clerk, a hotel concierge, a businessman, Kobe Bryant, Jimmy Kimmel and not one, but three women - even a Birkenstock wearing Granola) find themselves so immersed in the experience, they appear engaged in real life combat. To present a video game as so life-like that the players appear in the virtual world may not be a new concept or idea, but in this case, it is beautifully executed.

The everyday folk - and avid gamer celebs Kobe Bryant and Jimmy Kimmel who make appearances in the spot - are adeptly brandishing weapons while donning their civilian garb (love the Chanel shoulder bag), amongst the thunder of helicopters and flying shrapnel.

above: Video game fans Jimmy Kimmel and Kobe Bryant make appearances in the spot.

There's only one word of dialogue uttered in the whole script... when the hotel concierge, Vic, stops to answer his phone and identify himself while in the midst of combat.

And the final shot of a fast food cook with guns a-blazin' is the Creme de la Combat.

God damn, they were right when they said "There's A Soldier In All Of Us" and I didn't even know it. Now where's my Bazooka?

There’s a Soldier in All of Us (:60)

The Director's Cut Of That Cool Melting Perrier Commercial

You may have noticed the eye-catching Perrier television commercial in which it's so hot out that everything appears to be melting. Shot by director Frederic Planchon for Ogilvy Paris, it's not a new campaign for the brand, having been executed in 2009, but it's been airing here in the United States lately.

I happened to come across the 'director's cut' of the spot. Slightly longer, this version has used different shots, edit and most notably a different ending:

The client-approved spot ends with the main character jumping from her penthouse balcony into a refreshing pool as she reaches for the rolling bottle of Perrier, while the Director's cut ends with her diving off the balcony into the street and landing on a melting van.

above: two different endings to the Perrier "Melting" spot

As the spot actually airs:

The fabulous song that accompanies the spot is "Waves" by emi artist Camille.

The Nestle brand bottled water campaign's accompanying "melt" print ads were shot by Jean-Yves Lemoigne and took home a Cannes Silver Lion in 2009:

Sherwin Williams Launches Colorful New Ad Campaign Made of Paint Chips

A new fully integrated marketing campaign by McKinney Agency for Sherwin Williams paint stores celebrates a world made entirely of color chips. The launch effort consists of three tv commercials, four print ads, online advertising, an iPhone app and an interactive Color Visualizer.

The three 30-second animated television spots were directed and produced by Buck NY, and feature a range of wonderfully designed 3-D characters and environments that showcase Sherwin-Williams’ extensive color palette. The spots will air nationally on cable channels, including HGTV, Discovery, DIY, E!, ESPN, Food Network, GAC, Lifetime, Style, TNT Sports, USA and Weather.

Television Spots (two of the three)

some tv stills for you:

The four print ads feature original color-chip sculptures created by paper artist Matthew Sporzynski, who is the owner of New York's Couturier de Cardboard Inc (no website, sorry).

Sporzynski’s sculptures, including a vase of flowers, stuffed animal, birdhouse and ice cream sundae, marry craftsmanship with the fun of selecting just the right paint and color. The ads will appear in issues of Architectural Digest, Better Homes & Gardens, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, House Beautiful and This Old House and others.

Print Ads

a close-up look at the details:

Online executions include multiple display banner ads that invite consumers to engage with Sherwin-Williams color tools online, ranging from the ColorSnap® iPhone application to the brand’s Color Visualizer, which allows people to upload their own photos to help envision what their completed painting project may look like.

All executions utilize the tagline “Make the most of your color with the very best paint.”

With over 1,500 color chips at Sporzynski’s disposal, he was most attracted to Sherwin-Williams’ family of greens. “I’m always big into the greens,” he mused. “We used Gecko, House Plant and Pickle. I love the names of Sherwin-Williams paints. They’re so evocative.”

“Sherwin-Williams is all about helping people turn their color inspirations into reality. With over 1,500 colors to choose from, we know making the right color choice is as important as choosing the right paint. Our new Color Chips campaign symbolizes just how passionate we are about helping people create something beautiful with amazing colors and the highest quality paint.”--Ellen Moreau, Vice-President Marketing Communications

“We’re excited to have created a campaign that’s brand-focused storytelling through art. We were able to take what Sherwin-Williams is known for – expertise, advice and the world’s best paint – and leverage it against an emotionally resonant story about color, using the single most important element in most painting decisions: the color chip. Buck’s attention to detail throughout the spots, coupled with Matthew’s passion for color and design, makes this some of McKinney’s best work to date.”-- Jonathan Cude, chief creative officer, McKinney
