Cool Vintage Finds - Woven dreams

It's an image I grew up seeing: men and women sitting by the side of the road selling their crafts to anyone who would buy, in order to make enough money to feed their families. These people were obviously not rich but they possessed a great wealth of talent and knowledge when it came to their particular trades.

One of the
trades popular here in Barbados and other developing countries is weaving. This is the process of interlacing two distinct sets of thread, yarn or thin strips of any flexible material, to form a fabric.

There are various types of weave including plain weave, knitting, basket weave, twill, satin weave and jacquard weave which are used to make products such as fabric, baskets, hats and bags.

Below are some vintage woven items that I discovered.

The Headdress Affair: A Floral Fantasy

Think the Philip Treacy hat Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the Sex and the City London premiere was over the top?

The ultimate in extravagant floral headwear was seen at the 7th annual Tulips and Pansies: The Headdress Affair on May 15. The purpose of the event was to raise money for Village Care of New York’s various support programs for the 1500 AIDS and HIV patients they care for daily.

Some of fashion’s top designers such as Betsey Johnson, Catherine Malandrino and Lela Rose teamed up with New York City’s most prestigious florists to create the most imaginative and outrageous toppers using fresh cut flowers and living foliage.

The headdresses were judged on the categories ‘Most Outrageous’, ‘Most Beautiful’, ‘Most Original’ and ‘Most Engaging’.

If you were a judge, which ones would be your winners?

Celebrity Style for less - Diane Kruger

I'm loving Diane Kruger's style more and more everytime I see her. The actress once again shows us why she's one of Hollywood's most fashionable starlets in this unexpected yet ridiculously cool ensemble. She wore this great outfit to the Chanel Cruise 2009 collection show in Miami on May 15.

Diane paired a satin mini, straw hat, tan sandals and silver accessories together for a fabulous relaxed yet glam look. She wore it with an easy confidence that is needed to pull off such an outfit.

What I got - Saturday Shopping

Today I went on my regular Saturday thrift hunt and while the sales weren't as abundant as the last time I went, I still got some good stuff. This was a case of quality over quantity I guess. I'm on vacation now (whispers a silent thank you prayer) so I have a lot more time and energy to devote to retail therapy.

At the first sale I got a skirt and also a leather bag that the owner told me she bought for over $100 but never used it. Pity, but it's mine now haha!

At the second sale, I got a hat and a little purse from what I thought was a sweet old lady until she tried to sell me a mini April 2008 Marie Claire magazine for $5, non-negotiable. Fat chance! Yeah, I'm that ...ahem...frugal. At most garage sales I go to, used and much larger magazines sell for around 50 cents.

I took my hat and purse and left a happy woman with my $5, which I used later to buy a ring from a store.

Ah well, I still ended up spending it.

Pleated black and white skirt - BDS$3

Red and silver cocktail ring - BDS$5

Green netted hat - BDS$5

Top it off!

I have admired the bizarre yet awe inspiring work of British milliner Philip Treacy for a long time. His immense creativity seems to flow directly into the hats he makes, each one dramatic and stylish in its own unique way.

His creations are not for the faint of heart (nor broke of pocket) but even simply looking at them, you have to appreciate the amount of thought and skill that goes into his pieces.

If you're looking for some less expensive yet dramatic and quirky toppers for your hat collection, I've found a few that might tickle your fancy. (hehe I don't think I've ever used that expression before...and probably never will again.)
